Education MEC Debbie Schäfer and Premier Alan Winde hosted the class of 2020 to congratulate them on their results.
Winde said last year was an incredibly difficult year.

“But you persevered and finished your year, and for that, we, as a province, are proud."

Cape Town – Living in Enkanini informal settlement in Khayelitsha, without the best studying material or a conducive environment, did not stop a determined Ayabukwa Nombela from being among the country's top matriculants.
The Manzomthombo Secondary School learner came in 2nd place in Quintile 3 (no-fee schools) nationally. She achieved an 88% pass mark and distinctions in each of her six subjects.
When her parents saw the results at the school in Mfuleni yesterday, they were speechless, in tears and analysed her marks proudly.
With a pass rate of province's 79.9%, the province accounted for the top two maths pupils, with Daniel Gouws, from Hermanus High School, and Veren Naidoo, from Rondebosch Boys High School, claiming first and second place respectively. They both obtained 100% pass rates in maths.

Cape Town - For the first time since 2010, the Western Cape dipped below 80% in its matric pass rate, dropping from 82.3% in 2019 to 79.9%.
The province however achieved increases in both the maths (70.8%) and maths literacy (82.9%) pass rates, as well as boasting the top two candidates in maths nationally for the second year in a row.
It has also achieved an increase in the number of Bachelor passes, with 22 634 of the 51 633 candidates that wrote in the Western Cape, which is 43.8% compared to 43.6% last year.
Education MEC Debbie Schäfer said all provinces saw their pass rates decline – “an understandable outcome during a pandemic that severely disrupted schooling around the world”.

Veren Naidoo from Rondebosch Boys' High School in the Western Cape is still in shock after discovering he was second in mathematics in the country.
“I wasn’t expecting this because 2020 was a roller-coaster, it was a challenge navigating being a matriculant. The lack of classroom education brought a different kind of life and we were forced to adapt fast,” he said.
Naidoo said his community was elated by the news. “Everyone is so excited for me. We had a lot of distractions but we made it. Our teachers went above and beyond to ensure our success,” he added.
