As promised, here’s some additional information on our inaugural “Spirit of Carlsbad” awards, which is being co-hosted by the City of Carlsbad, the Carlsbad Current-Argus, the Ricky Garcia Foundation and the United Way of Eddy County. We are now accepting nominations for five different awards: Humanitarian of the Year, Outstanding Citizen of the Year, Student Humanitarian of the Year, Student Outstanding Citizen of the Year and Nonprofit Agency of the Year. We offer our condolences to the family of Verna Stell, who passed away on Feb. 5. Graveside services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Friday. Verna’s husband, State Representative Joe Stell, passed away in October. Together, Verna and Joe worked very hard for Carlsbad and the entire state for many years on numerous conservation and water issues.
