C. Visayas LGUs told to ramp up booster vaccination vs. Covid-19

Visayas Vaccination Operations Center spokesperson and Department of Health-7 chief pathologist Dr. Mary Jean Loreche. (File photo) CEBU CITY - Amid a lower booster jab rate in Central Visayas during the election season, local chief executives in the region were urged to ramp up booster inoculation against coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19). "A booster will ensure that the immunity of a person is maintained in order to remain protected from the Covid-19 virus," Dr. Mary Jean Loreche, regional pathologist and Visayas Vaccination Operations Center spokesperson, said on Monday. She said the diminishing fear of people getting Covid-19 has contributed to the drop in the number of vaccinees showing up for their booster jab. "Yes, it's highly probable that people have seen the low number of (Covid-19) cases and think that they don't need the vaccine, especially those for booster shots," Loreche told the Philippine News Agency. She also said shifting priorities of local officials during the campaign period for the May 9 elections is also seen as a reason for the lower booster vaccination effort in the local government units (LGUs). "Whilst it is true that elections got in the way of the vaccination activities as there was a deviation in the priority of activities, still it's the vaccinee's mindset that played a bigger role in the slowing of the vaccination," Loreche said. She, however, noted the effort of some LGUs in enticing their constituents to get their third jab such as giving out incentives, visiting vaccinees down in the sitio (sub-village) level, and house-to-house drive for the senior citizens and persons with comorbidities. DOH-7 records showed that southern Cebu towns have administered booster shots to only 8 percent of the 384,479 adults who took their second dose while 12 percent of the 444,235 adults in northern towns who have completed the primary shots got boosted. In Metro Cebu localities, only about 17 percent of 1.9 million individuals showed up for their booster jabs. (PNA) }

Transition of Lapu-Lapu City to Alert Level 1 backed

Department of Health (DOH)-Central Visayas chief pathologist and Visayas Vaccination Operations Office spokesperson Dr. Mary Jean Loreche. (File photo) CEBU CITY - The Visayas Vaccination Operations Center (VVOC) is confident that Lapu-Lapu City will be added to the two localities in Central Visayas placed under coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) Alert Level 1, a spokesperson said on Friday. Department of Health (DOH)-Central Visayas chief pathologist, Dr. Mary Jean Loreche, said Lapu-Lapu City was able to reconcile its vaccination data, pulling out names from other categories and transferred them to the A2 category for the national vaccine rollout. "Lapu-Lapu City was able to present its compliance to the fourth requirement before a locality can be allowed to transition to Alert Level 1, that is to inoculate 70 percent of the total population of elderlies," Loreche, also a VVOC spokesperson, told the Philippine News Agency (PNA) in an interview. The city pulled out data of individuals aged 60 and above and placed them under A2 category which eventually result in hitting the 73 percent total coverage for the seniors' inoculation. In the daily meetings with the national vaccination rollout, Loreche said she kept on questioning the discrepancy between the figures presented by the DOH-7 and the Local Vaccination Operations Centers (LVOV) which could be a reason why many of the localities remain under Alert Level 2 because their data on the senior citizen's inoculation would always appear as if they have not hit the minimum which is 70 percent coverage. "They have to coordinate with the NVOC (National Vaccination Operations Center) so that they can correct the figures and do the necessary adjustments and the possibility of de-escalation to Alert Level 1," she said. The National Task Force against Covid-19, through Health Secretary Francisco Duque III, pledged to look into the case of Lapu-Lapu City, after Mayor Junard Chan appealed during their "Bida Tungo sa New Normal Roadshow" on March 18 to place the island city under the lowest alert phase. Loreche is also hopeful that Mandaue City could reconcile its record and join with Cebu localities under Alert Level 1. As of March 16, the Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases (IATF) placed Cebu City and Siquijor under Alert Level 1. Meanwhile, Loreche urged local government units to continue with the efforts to inoculate senior citizens despite the de-escalation of the alert level. "Yes even if they have reached that required coverage and allowed to transition to the lowest alert level, I would really recommend that they still need to look for seniors who are unvaccinated and to continue encouraging them to get their vaccine," she added. DOH-7 exec says high vax rates stem variant-driven Covid surge

Dr. Mary Jean Loreche, Department of Health (DOH)-Region 7 chief pathologist. (Screengrab from VVOC video) CEBU CITY - Aggressive inoculation of eligible population and compliance with the minimum health standards protect the Central Visayas region from surges driven by coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) variants and sub-variants, a health official said on Tuesday. Dr. Mary Jean Loreche, Department of Health (DOH)-Region 7 chief pathologist, said in a presser at the Visayas Vaccination Operations Center (VVOC) that local government units' (LGU) efforts to inoculate their constituents have paid back. She noted a slowdown in Covid-19 cases despite the reported presence of "Delmicron", a combination of the Covid-19 variants Delta and Omicron, as well as the BA.2 or the sub-variant of Omicron known as "Stealth Omicron". As of Monday, Central Visayas recorded a total of 896 active cases with more than half coming from this capital city. The neighboring cities of Mandaue of Lapu-Lapu reported 33 and 25 active cases, respectively. Of the three provinces, Cebu recorded 283 active cases while Negros Oriental and Bohol have 43 and 14, respectively. Siquijor listed only eight active cases. "We have battled this pandemic for quite some time. But because our vaccination is making headway, we expect more LGUs will be allowed to transition to Alert Level 1," Loreche said. This city and the province of Siquijor were already placed under Alert Level 1, the lowest restriction status against Covid-19. Loreche said Mandaue could be added to the list by next week considering its high vaccination rate. She also commended the cities of Talisay, the municipality of Minglanilla and the island town of Cordova for improving their numbers of inoculated residents, especially the senior citizens. Based on the Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Infectious Diseases' (IATF) rules, a locality can be allowed to transition to a lower alert level if it shows a downtrend in Covid-19 caseload, its hospital bed vacancy rate is high, has vaccinated 70 percent of its population, and reached 80 percent of total coverage for the senior citizens. The VVOC data showed that the nine localities in Metro Cebu have a combined vaccination accomplishment rate of 71 percent for their senior citizens. However, Loreche called on the city of Naga and the towns of Consolacion and Liloan to ramp up the inoculation of their elderly population after reporting below 70 percent accomplishment rates. Meanwhile, the health official said the DOH-7 and Cebu Provincial Health Office will establish vaccination sites at the North Bus Terminal in Mandaue City and South Bus Terminal along N. Bacalso Avenue here to make Covid-19 vaccines accessible to travelers. (PNA) }
