Watseka officials will work with a resident on issues regarding burning at the yard waste facility south of the city.
At Tuesday’s Watseka City Council meeting, the issue was broached by resident Merrill Crowley, who said it was the third time he had discussed it with the city since 2019. (See Times-Republic articles dated June 28, 2019, and June 26, 2020).
Crowley said green wood produces benzene, formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, acrolein and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. He noted, too, that the yard waste facility is in the vicinity of not only residents, but a hospital two schools and a nursing home facility that are affected by the south to southwest winds that blow the smoke from the yard waste facility into town.

Watseka eyes adding gas tax to pay for road repairs

The Watseka City Council will investigate the possibility of adding a gas tax.
Alderman Dennis Cahoe said at last week’s finance committee meeting that the city’s roads are in need of work and this would be a way to establish some funds to do that. Cahoe said at the time that raising property taxes is not a good idea. He also said that if anyone else has ideas on how to get some of the projects funded the council will be happy to listen.
On April 27 Cahoe said, “Last finance meeting we talked about this gas tax as a way to possibly finance street repairs. I think all of us agree there’s plenty of work to be done on streets. Since I didn’t have all the answers to questions you might have, I’ve asked Mr. (city attorney Joe) Cainkar to speak.”

Watseka tables pay raise for laborers until union responds

Listen to this article
A discussion on approving raises for public works and water/wastewater laborers was table at the Watseka City Council Tuesday night on advice of counsel.
The aldermen had discussed raising the laborers pay to $19/hour starting May 1.
City Attorney Joe Cainkar said he has not yet heard back from the union representatives and advised the council to wait until that correspondence has arrived.
“We can’t do it yet,” Cainkar said. “We haven’t heard back from the union yet.”
“Why do we have to wait on them?” Alderman Dennis Cahoe asked.
“Because you’re going to get an unfair labor practice if you do something without their approval,” Cainkar said.
