Krzysztof Piatek and Vincenzo Grifo will be among the chief goal threats in Thursday's rescheduled Matchday 30 clash between Hertha Berlin and Freiburg (kick-off: 6.30pm GMT+2).
Piatek missed a golden opportunity to secure a vital win for Hertha in Monday's rearranged contest with Mainz (1-1), but failed to convert Vladimir Darida's excellent cross after coming off the bench late on. The Pole hasn't scored in his last five outings, but Pal Dardai could still restore him to the starting line-up if he decides Matheus Cunha or Jhon Cordoba needs a rest during this marathon run of six games in 20 days. The Old Lady sit 17th in the table, two points behind Cologne in the relegation play-off spot and three behind Arminia Bielefeld and Werder Bremen in 15th and 14th respectively. They still have two games in hand over their relegation rivals, but need a win here to ease the pressure before a trip to already-relegated Schalke. Captain Dedryck Boyata made his comeback from a long-term foot injury against Mainz and could make his first start since December, especially if Dardai goes with four at the back.

African players in Europe: Elneny's special goal for Arsenal

Card image cap

Paris (AFP) – Egyptian Mohamed Elneny broke a 64-match English Premier League goal drought since joining Arsenal five years ago by scoring in a 2-0 win over Newcastle at the weekend.
The 28-year-old midfielder needed only six minutes at St James Park to end his barren run and Gabon captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang doubled the lead midway through the second half.
Victory snapped a three-game winless streak by Arsenal ahead of a Europa League semi-final second leg against Villarreal at the Emirates on Thursday.
Here, AFP Sport rounds up the performances of Africans in the major European leagues:

Ed-Seth: Bumped from the message board. Original thread here.
I don’t think one of these has been posted in a while and the last few days have been pretty good for the USMNT, so I thought now was as good of a time as any.  Usually there are at least a handful of people interested.
One cool stat, as of 5 days ago, is that in the top 5 leagues of Europe, the United States is:
- 5th in minutes played u20 players (ahead of Italy, one of the countries that has a top 5 league)
- 6th in minutes played by u21 players

No Haaland, no problem as Dortmund rout Kiel to reach German Cup final

No Haaland, no problem as Dortmund rout Kiel to reach German Cup final
Berlin (AFP) – Borussia Dortmund thrashed second-division Holstein Kiel 5-0 on Saturday in their German Cup semi-final even with top-scorer Erling Braut Haaland sidelined.
Haaland, suffering from a thigh injury, watched from the stands at Signal Iduna Park as Giovanni Reyna started the rout with the first two goals to help put Dortmund in the final at Berlin’s Olympic Stadium on May 13.
Dortmund will face RB Leipzig, who needed Emil Forsberg’s 121st-minute winner at the end of extra-time to seal a dramatic 2-1 win at Werder Bremen on Friday in the other semi-final.

BREMEN: Emil Forsberg volleyed RB Leipzig into the German Cup final by sealing a 2-1 win at Werder Bremen with a stunning last-gasp goal in extra-time on Friday.
Hwang Hee-chan had put Leipzig ahead at the start of extra-time only for Bremen midfielder Leonardo Bittencourt to level with a superb finish before Forsberg came off the bench to hit the winner.
“I was only on for about five minutes, but that was enough to get the goal,” said Forsberg. “We are all really happy to be in the final and looking forward to it.

Neither side was able to score within 90 minutes, but at the start of extra time, Leipzig increased the pressure to seal a dramatic victory.
Leipzig made a bright start on the road as Alexander Sorloth's header on target forced Bremen goalkeeper Jiri Pavlenka into action with four minutes gone.

Bundesliga | How will RB Leipzig line up under Jesse Marsch?

RB Leipzig have moved quickly to replace the Bayern Munich-bound Julian Nagelsmann, with American coach Jesse Marsch set to join from Red Bull Salzburg at the end of the season. How will Leipzig line up under the new man?
Marsch is already familiar with many of the players at the other Red Bull Arena, having acted as assistant to Ralf Rangnick in the 2018/19 season before his successful spell as first-team coach in Salzburg, whom he led to the double of Austrian Bundesliga and Cup in 2020 - something he is on course to replicate in the current campaign.
Of Leipzig's average first XI this season, seven of them - Peter Gulacsi, Willi Orban, Dayot Upamecano, Marcel Halstenberg, Tyler Adams, Marcel Sabitzer and Kevin Kampl - were at the club when Marsch last was. However, Leipzig were largely a 4-4-2 team back then, and Nagelsmann has used the same personnel in radically different ways in his 22 months at the helm.

Josh Sargent will have to plot a way past Ibrahima Konate if Werder Bremen are to overcome RB Leipzig in their DFB Cup semi-final on Friday (kick-off 8.30pm GMT+2).
Bremen's run in the cup could provide a welcome distraction from their spiralling league form. A 3-1 defeat away to Union Berlin on Matchday 31 at the weekend was their seventh consecutive Bundesliga loss, leaving them looking nervously over their shoulders at Cologne, just one point below them in the relegation play-off spot. A morale-boosting win over Leipzig, then, would not only give them a cup final to look forward to against either Borussia Dortmund or Bundesliga 2 promotion hopefulsHolstein Kiel on 13 May, it could give them momentum going into their vital final three games of the season. Coach Florian Kohfeldt has named almost what many would consider his best team in the last two games. With Marco Friedl sidelined, one change at least will have to be made in defence.

Erling Haaland can help guide Borussia Dortmund a step closer to silverware if they can get past Bayern Munich's conquerors Holstein Kiel and Hauke Wahl in the DFB Cup semi-final on Saturday (kick-off: 8.30pm GMT+2).
Haaland recently reached a half century of Dortmund goals, with braces in wins against Werder Bremen and Wolfsburg taking him to 53 in 56 appearances in Black and Yellow. The Norwegian has struck at least double in 14 different matches this season, including each of the last five Bundesliga matches when he’s netted. He was re-joined at the weekend by Jadon Sancho, who was making his first start since the start of March when BVB beat Borussia Mönchengladbach 1-0 in the quarter-finals thanks to his goal. Dortmund had earlier breezed past Duisburg (5-0) and Eintracht Braunschweig (2-0) before a nervy 3-2 extra-time win over Paderborn in the round of 16. The England winger has been on the scoresheet in all four rounds and should start once again. Mats Hummels returns from a league suspension at centre-back, while Jude Bellingham's dismissal against Wolfsburg doesn't impact his availability in the cup. He is likely to start in midfield given that Mo Dahoud does serve a one-match ban in the competition.

Bayern Munich have appointed Julian Nagelsmann as their next manager, having reached a compensation agreement with RB Leipzig.
Nagelsmann, 33, is considered one of the best young managers in the game and has signed a deal with the Bundesliga champions through to 2026. Bayern have paid compensation to Leipzig, which sources have told ESPN is a record fee for a manager, eclipsing the €15 million Chelsea paid Porto for Andre Villas-Boas in 2011.

Bundesliga | Bayern Munich name RB Leipzig's Julian Nagelsmann as Hansi Flick's successor

Julian Nagelsmann has agreed to join Bayern Munich as head coach, the RB Leipzig tactician replacing Hansi Flick at the Allianz Arena this summer.
The 33-year-old, who is widely regarded as one of the brightest young coaches in world football, has signed a five-year deal through to 30 June 2026. The appointment comes as the record champions agreed to Flick's desire to end his contract at the end of the current season.
“Julian’s contract length of five years alone shows how much he identifies with FC Bayern. I’m convinced we will have a very successful future at FC Bayern with Julian,” said board member and future CEO Oliver Kahn. “I’d also like to thank Hansi. He led FC Bayern to amazing success with great football. We’ve now fulfilled his wish to leave FC Bayern before the end of his contract.”

Julian Nagelsmann: Bayern Munich appoints Leipzig coach to replace Hansi Flick

Bayern Munich has hired Leipzig coach Julian Nagelsmann to replace the departing Hansi Flick.
Nagelsmann, 33, will move to Bayern on July 1 with a contract that runs until 2026.
Bayern said it agreed to terminate Flick's contract after he asked to be released early.
Leipzig CEO Oliver Mintzlaff said Bayern agreed to its demand for a high fee for Nagelsmann, without specifying a sum.
Nagelsmann grew up near Munich and came through the youth system at another club in the city.
"There were some inquiries from other clubs. I told Oli (Mintzlaff) that I wouldn't want to end my contract for any other club but this one," Nagelsmann said.
