MANILA - The Philippine National Police (PNP) dismissed the claim of a business group saying there had been 56 kidnapping incidents in the country in the last 10 days. PNP spokesperson Col. Jean Fajardo, in a press briefing in Camp Crame on Wednesday, said they only recorded 27 kidnapping cases in the country since January, which is only less than half of the figure claimed by the Philippine Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCCI). "For this year, they (AKG officials) recorded 27 and many of these cases are POGO (Philippine Offshore Gaming Operations)-related," Fajardo said. She added that the PCCCI has not shown any proof to support its claim. Of the total 27 cases, Fajardo said 11 have been already "solved", meaning the charges were already filed and the suspects were already arrested; four are considered "cleared" or charges were already filed but the suspects are still at-large; while the remaining 12 are still under investigation. MANILA - The Ukraine-Russia conflict is expected to have a limited direct impact on the Philippines' trade sector, a Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) official said Friday. The Philippines' total exports to Russia in 2021 amounted to about USD120 million, or about 0.2 percent of its total exports, while the country's exports to Ukraine totaled USD5 million, BSP Department of Economic Research Managing Director Zeno Ronald Abenoja said in a virtual briefing aired over the central bank's Facebook page. Philippine imports to Russia in the same year comprised 0.6 percent of its total imports, and for Ukraine, 0.1 percent, Abenoja said. "These numbers indicate that direct trade linkages are quite very, very low. However, probably the impact, the possible ramifications of the tensions in the European region, could be traced more on the impact of the escalation on our major trading partners, including EU (European Union) and the US," he said.
