It’s time for the first big Grant County shindig of the year to commemorate the year the region was put on the map nationally as a place to be.
Gold was discovered in the place that is now Canyon City in 1862 and so every year in mid-June, the local Whiskey Gulch Gang nonprofit group of friends puts together the ’62 Days Celebration marking that momentous year. This year, the two-day event takes place June 14 and 15 primarily along Washington Street in downtown Canyon City.
The second annual Oktoberfest at Sels’ Brewery was held in Canyon City on Saturday, Sept. 16 with about 150 people enjoying beer, hamburgers and bratwurst to the sounds of country music played by local favorite the James Gang Band.
The event was the third time the venue opened this year, with the first in June during the annual ’62 Days Celebration to honor the discovery of gold and the gold rush in Canyon City in 1862. The Whiskey Gulch Gang, the local Canyon City-based nonprofit that sponsors ’62 Days, owns Sel’s and also opens it to the public a few times in the year as a place to listen to music and enjoy food and beer. ....
