Cape Town - Power utility Eskom is in the process of quantifying losses incurred in the R841 million accommodation building for workers at the Kusile power station.
This was revealed by Public Enterprises Minister Pravin Gordhan in his written response to parliamentary questions by DA MP Benedicta van Minnen.
The incomplete project, known as Wilge Residential Development Project, was initially costed at R260m but it ballooned to more than R800m when it was halted in 2019.
“Eskom is in the process of quantifying the losses incurred and the parties against whom legal actions should be taken. Counsel has been engaged to advise on the merits of intended action,” Gordhan said. ....

Power utility Eskom says it would have to impose an additional 15% tariff hike in the 2023 financial year and resolve the existing municipal debt to become a profitable business again.
This is according to CEO Andre de Ruyter, who made the revelation before the portfolio committee on public enterprises on Wednesday.
This was less than 24 hours after the Pretoria high court ordered the National Energy Regulator of SA (Nersa) to add R10bn to Eskom’s allowable revenue to be recovered from tariff customers in the 2021/2022 financial year.     ....

Eskom keen to get rid of cash-burning flats

Eskom keen to get rid of cash-burning flats

With its modern look and four-storey apartments boasting aluminium windows and balcony railings, the Wilge Residential Development Project near Kusile power station in Mpumalanga should be Eskom’s showcase of dynamism and appreciation of its employees.
But the multimillion-rand project which initially started with a budget of R160m in 2008 before it ballooned to more than R800m when it was abandoned in 2019 has become a symbol of monumental waste of taxpayers money.

Eskom squandered more than R800m building flats for construction workers at its Kusile power station but parliament was told on Wednesday that the flats were uninhabitable.
The company had budgeted R160m for the Wilge Residential Development Project, a few kilometres from Kusile. Now, some nine years later, MPs heard on Wednesday that R840m was spent, that the project remains incomplete and that the units are uninhabitable. ....
