Human Rights activist Pemphero Mphande has called the Malawi Police Service (MPS) to reinstate Sub Inspector Williams Kaponda who has been redeployed to Ndonda police unit in Kasungu and reverted to general duties. During the weekend social media was awash with reports that Nkhotakota Police Station Public Relations Officer Kaponda has been transferred over a Facebook post he made. It is reported that Kaponda questioned Tonse Alliance administration of the promised they made during campaign period that once ascend into government they will not make police officers line up along the roads waiting for the president. âI’m hearing a police officer has been demoted in Nkhotakota for questioning why officers still have to stand on the roadside waiting for the President to pass. If true, this is retrogressive and not the new Malawi we hoped for,â Mphande said. ....
Demotion of Williams Kaponda who was the Public Relations Officer for Nkhotakota Police Station over a Facebook post he made has attracted mixed reactions from the public of which some have faulted the law enforcement agency. Kaponda wrote on his official Facebook page reminding the Tonse Alliance leadership of the promises they made regarding making police officers lining up along the roads when the president is passing. Following his comment, it was later reported that Kaponda has been demoted and transferred to Ndonda Police Unit in Kasungu where he has been reverted to general duties. National police spokesperson James Kadadzera confirmed of the development arguing that the officer in question has been redeployed over what he called indiscipline. ....
Fire has gutted over seven houses, destroying several items whose value could not be immediately unquantified, at Chiboko area under Traditional Authority (T/A) Mphonde in Nkhotakota District. According to an eye witness Osman Chipatala from the village, the fire emanated from a kitchen room around the affected area, and no life has been claimed during the inferno, as people are currently putting out the fire.
