A gang of five metal detectorists have admitted illegally plundering ancient artefacts from protected historic sites during a series of night-time raids.  Known as nighthawking, the quintent unearthed and stole bronze axe heads and old coins from Beeston Castle, in Cheshire and the Grade II-listed Roche Abbey in Yorkshire while using metal detectors. Donations of more than £30,000 have been received by English Heritage to help make the historic monument brighter and whiter than ever before. Win Scutt, the national charity's properties coordinator, said: "It will be the biggest overhaul we've ever done on the site."
