Researchers 'Shocked' To Discover 2,000-Year-Old Egyptian Mummy Was A Pregnant Woman

By: CBS News
Researchers examining an ancient Egyptian mummy thought that they were looking at the body of a male priest. Instead, they were shocked to discover the body was actually a woman — who had been seven months pregnant at the time of her death.
According to a new study in the Journal of Archaeological Science, X-rays and computer tests finally revealed the mummy's true identity, showing the small hands and feet of a fetus. Researchers in Poland said it's the first and only known case of a well-preserved mummified pregnant woman.
The mummy dates back to the first century B.C. and is believed to come from royal tombs in Thebes in Upper Egypt. It first arrived in Warsaw in 1826.

An ancient Egyptian mummy once believed to be the remains of a male priest is actually the embalmed body of a woman in the third trimester of pregnancy, Polish scientists said on Friday.
Marzena Ozarek-Szilke, an anthropologist at the Warsaw Mummy Project, was examining a CT scan of a mummy at the National Museum in the Polish capital when she spotted something peculiar.
"When I looked at the lesser pelvis of our mummy I was interested in what was inside... I thought I saw a tiny foot," Ozarek-Szilke said.

A Pregnant Ancient Egyptian Mummy Has Been Discovered in a Shocking World First
30 APRIL 2021
At first, archaeologists thought they were scanning the mummy of an ancient Egyptian priest named Hor-Djehuty. Then, in the body's abdomen, images revealed what appeared to be the bones of a tiny foot.

Full scans confirmed it: the foot belonged to a tiny fetus, still in the womb of its deceased and mummified mother.
Not only is this the first time a deliberately mummified pregnant woman has been found, it presents a fascinating mystery. Who was the woman? And why was she mummified with her fetus? So peculiar is the discovery, scientists have named her the Mysterious Lady of the National Museum in Warsaw.
