About six months after Kantaben lost her husband to COVID-19, members of the Self-Employed Women’s Association (SEWA)—a national trade union of 2.5 million informal workers in India—approached Kantaben about renewing her annual union membership.
Today, an estimated 184 million migrants live outside the country of their citizenship. Of this total, refugees number 37 million, including the 7.8 million Ukrainians who have been seeking shelter in the EU since the start of the Russia-Ukraine war.
The hackathon has been held annually since it was first organized in 2020. Over the years, interest in the hackathon has grown. More than 540 people from around the country applied for this year’s competition, 70 percent of whom were students, mostly aged 18 to 24.
According to the newly released UNHCR data and World Bank estimates, the number of refugees globally rose to 35.3 million in 2022, a steep increase from 27.1 million in 2021. This represents a new record since World War II.

Our findings surprised us, shifted our views, and shaped our engagement, and we hope they can contribute to meaningful progress for displaced people.
