Officials say people in the highest risk areas should evacuate immediately while others have until noon Friday to leave
YELLOWKNIFE — Some 20,000 residents in the capital of the Northwest Territories have been ordered to leave by Friday as wildfire danger in the region intensifies.
An evacuation order along Highway 3 in the N.W.T. has been extended to Yellowknife's municipal boundary, as a wildfire is burning about 17 kilometres to the west of the city.
The Northwest Territories government launched two new programs on Thursday to help evacuees, and some host communities, with the financial burden of displacement.
For most people who experience emotionally difficult or shocking situations, the most important thing is to have someone to talk to, says a Yellowknife-based psychologist. Counsellors were made available to evacuees as soon as they arrived in Yellowknife.
