Researchers at the Tokyo Medical and Dental University (TMDU) have created a novel artificial intelligence (AI) model capable of forecasting the likelihood of sustained vision impairment in individuals with high myopia, a leading cause of irreversible blindness globally. The machine-learning model, developed to predict and visualize long-term visual impairment risk, demonstrates effectiveness. High myopia, extreme nearsightedness, can be corrected with contacts, glasses, or surgery, but it may result in pathologic myopia, a significant contributor to blindness.
The machine-learning model, based on a dataset of 967 Japanese patients, utilised variables commonly collected during ophthalmic examinations.
<p>Researchers from the Tokyo Medical and Dental University (TMDU) developed machine-learning models to predict visual acuity in patients with high myopia. A cohort study of 967 patients was used to evaluate the models. The results show that a regression model accurately predicts visual acuity at 3 and 5 years, and a binary classification model can predict and visualize the risk at 5 years for individual patients, demonstrating potential in clinical assessment and monitoring.</p>
