JNS.org - An egregious lie has been making the rounds lately. It is a timeworn smear against the Jewish people.
No matter how much one has managed to accumulate in terms of material possessions, or to what extent one has managed to isolate oneself from the outside world happiness and contentment may well continue to be elusive. In fact, a 2015 study carried out by two economics professors at Emory University empirically demonstrated that great wealth often decreases one’s happiness.
Every human being on the planet is driven by selfish needs and desires, and yet the evidence is that being successful does not guarantee the happiness we all constantly seek. If so, how is it possible to find happiness? The answer appears to be both for those who have accumulated wealth, as well as for those without it to engage in acts of compassion.
Is the Oral Torah a Later Development?
My parents were both of the belief that only the Torah itself is sacred, and that the Talmud and the Oral Torah were developed much later. They were the attempt of self-appointed rabbis to interpret the Scripture, but it is not the Torah itself. My parents saw the Oral Law as having developed slowly over the years, adding layer upon layer upon the Torah itself – and that we should really just keep God’s word rather than the invented interpretations of the rabbis. I’m sort of confused about this topic myself and would like to hear your take. Do we have any way of knowing if my parents’ understanding is accurate or not?
Shmot 5781: Fighting Illiteracy and Apathy; Don’t Know and Don’t Care
Shmot (Exodus 1:1-6:1)
GOOD MORNING! As I sit here writing this week’s column, the stillness of the rural Pennsylvania countryside is momentarily shattered by an eruption of fireworks and distant revelry ushering in 2021. In all likelihood, a big part of the celebration is spurred by the sentiment of finally turning the page and moving on from a very difficult 2020.
Still, moving on to a new year does not resolve the serious losses that so many continue to suffer from; the loss of loved ones, livelihoods, or in some cases both. It’s difficult times such as these when we must turn our attention to helping those who have suffered.
