在祖国西北边境线的新疆生产建设兵团第十师一八一团，52公里的边境线上人烟稀少，哈萨克族职工胡拥军33年坚守这里为国巡边。
胡拥军守护的哨所紧挨着中蒙边境三号界碑，到最近的一户人家也要走5公里的山路。平时都是他一个人骑着马带着馕，背着望远镜、镐把、斧头，在山谷中巡边护边，几个月见不到一个人，说不上一句话。1998年的一天，胡拥军发现自己帐篷前拴了5匹马，5个陌生人坐在他的帐篷里。
胡拥军稳住心神，找到机会赶马下山，将盗猎者的情况报告给了边防派出所。边防民警在这个盗猎团伙出山之前将他们抓获，为国家挽回了损失。
1999年8月，在从三号界碑回到牧业点的途中，山里天气骤变下起了大雪，胡拥军被困在“三号沟”，靠着啃干馕、喝雪水度过了艰� ....
