Fed says largest US banks can withstand economic crisis Dec 20, 2020 Washington The US Federal Reserve found that the largest US banks have “strong capital levels” and are able to withstand a severe global economic downturn. Following the favourable assessment, the Fed on Friday said it would loosen restrictions on companies to buy back their shares, a practice that was restricted as the pandemic rattled the economy. The loosening of share buybacks shows the Fed’s confidence in the banks capital levels, however, the Fed is continuing its restrictions on dividend payouts. The results, part of a stress test performed on the largest 33 banks, found that while banks could weather a severe downturn, they could face over 600 billion dollars in losses. ....
