Speedskater stirs further anger with Olympic flag

Taiwanese speedskater Huang Yu-ting (黃郁婷) leading Taiwanese athletes as a flagbearer at the Beijing Winter Olympics opening ceremony has further upset the public and politicians in Taiwan, as she was branded a “disgrace” for “surrendering” after posting photos of herself practicing in China’s national team jersey.
“Taiwan’s Olympic athletes had in the past always worn our national uniform with pride and patriotism. We cannot accept Huang saying there is no issue of nationality in sports to explain her action,” retired army general Yu Pei-chen (于北辰) said yesterday.
“The crucial matter is that Huang is in Beijing to represent our country, just ....

KMT's Yen lacks political values - Taipei Times

After leaving the Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) late last month, retired army general Yu Pei-chen (于北辰) announced his support for Democratic Progressive Party legislator-elect Lin Ching-yi (林靜儀) in her campaign for a by-election in Taichung’s second electoral district on Sunday last week, which she won.
Lin’s rival in the by-election, former legislator Yen Kuan-heng (顏寬恒) of the KMT, said that Yu switching sides showed that “a political party with no soul is no different than a convenience store franchise.”

Yu stands in contrast to turncoat generals

Big-name Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) politicians and high-ranking military officers frequently visit former president Chiang Kai-shek’s (蔣介石) mausoleum in Cihu (慈湖) in Taoyuan’s Dasi District (大溪) to lay flowers and commemorate the self-styled “generalissimo” and his son former president Chiang Ching-kuo (蔣經國).
However, are these “big beasts” of the pan-blue camp and top military brass really as loyal to the memory of the two Chiangs as their public pilgrimages make them out to be?
In April 2015, former premier Hau Pei-tsun (郝柏村) led a delegation of 21 retired generals and more than 100 other retired high-ranking officers to the Cihu Mausoleum ....

DPP should embrace Yu Pei-chen - Taipei Times

Retired army general Yu Pei-chen (于北辰) on Friday announced on Facebook that he was leaving the Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT). POP Radio politics talk show host Chiu Ming-yu (邱明玉) said that she has heard that Yu might run as an independent candidate for city councilor in this year’s local elections.
Instead of running as an independent candidate for the Taoyuan City Council, Yu could be the Democratic Progressive Party’s (DPP) candidate for Taoyuan mayor. According to news reports, DPP internal polling shows that, despite having been born into a KMT-supporting military family, voters view Yu as level-headed and reasonable.
Yu has previously ....
