world. no jubilee for american drivers that are being pelted left and right with prices that go higher and higher and higher. but leaving that aside, concerns as well that the president while he talks up the idea of trying to address this and quickly, that he s falling back on things that we ve heard before. let s goo to the latest from the white house, peter doocy. neil, officials around here at the white house keep saying they think the president s economic plan is working and near celebrating last month s job report came in 65,000 jobs higher than anticipated. the president himself in delaware today saying that reports beating expectations may not be here for much longer. we re not likely to see the blockbuster job reports month after month like we had over this past year. but that s a good thing. that s a sign of a healthy economy. with steady growth. the president says inflation, it s his number 1 domestic priority while admitting there s nothing that he can ....
Can you give us an idea what that means? like any medicine, the inflation fighting medicine has side effects. in this case it is layoffs. so 264,000 initial jobless claims in the last week. this is a proxy for layoffs. this is actually the highest level since october of 2021. this is evidence that layoffs are picking up in this economy. we have to remember, though, this is coming off of historic lows. the unemployment rate, 3.4% that s tied for a half century low. but we are hearing about more layoffs in tech, in media, in finance. this, though, would have to come up a lot higher to really alarm economists. i talked to mark zandy from moody s he said anything around 260 is consistent with a healthy job market. the number to watch, 350, if it got to there, that s where you start to worry about a recession. we re not there yet. it s a lot of people looking ....
But you work for it, so you got it. one of the things that vandy was telling me is this idea of price gouging. it s not so. this is from zandy. there s a long list of reasons why inflation is so uncomfortably painfully high. at the very top, the russian invasion of ukraine and the surge in oil prices, pandemic is second. i would put at the very bottom of the list, maybe not on the list, price gouging. i don t think that is a factor here at all. neil: what did you make of that? not a factor at all? i was thinking about the wages that we saw in the may jobs reports, 5%, which is great. but inflation is 8%. but you re losing money because of the price increases. the participation rate was encouraging with more people joining the work force at 330,000. you have to think that at some point, the high prices is going ....
