THE huge demand for face masks in the year since the coronavirus pandemic swept the globe has resulted in enormous production of disposable masks, but it is now feared that undisposed of properly, they pose a major threat to the natural world.
Recent studies estimate humans around the world are now using a mind-boggling 129 billion face masks every month. Taking 31 days in a month, that is an average usage of 2.8 million masks a minute being used across the planet.
Researchers warn that the huge volume of masks, with their plastic composition, pose a growing environmental threat and are urging action to prevent it from becoming the next plastic problem. ....

New research assessed across the earth shows that humans are presently using mind-blowing 129 billion face masks each month. The average usage of 2.8 million masks is taking 31 days in a month around the world to be used in a minute

Recent studies estimate that we use an astounding 129 billion face masks globally every month - that is 3 million a minute. Most of them are disposable face masks made from plastic microfibers.
With increasing reports on inappropriate disposal of masks, it is urgent to recognize this potential environmental threat and prevent it from becoming the next plastic problem, researchers warn in a comment in the scientific journal 
Frontiers of Environmental Science & Engineering.
The researchers are Environmental Toxicologist Elvis Genbo Xu from University of Southern Denmark and Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering Zhiyong Jason Ren from Princeton University. ....

It's time to figure out how to deal with the face mask waste


It was already a big problem before the Covid-19 pandemic, but plastic waste is now turning into an even larger issue – and face masks, in particular, are not helping the cause. We need them to avoid the spread of the virus but at the same time, there’s no official guidance on how to dispose of them. Most of them just end in the trash, and that needs to change.
