Frustrated Mount Morgan residents want a long-term solution to their dwindling town water supply in central Queensland, as carting water is costing them $70,000 a week.

Rockhampton Regional Council has been named a finalist in the 2021 Australian Sustainable Communities Tidy Towns awards.
Council welcomed national judge Gail Langley to the region last week and showcased the initiatives that resulted in Rockhampton being crowned Queensland’s most Sustainable Community 2020.
Councillor for Water and Supporting a Better Environment, Donna Kirkland, said after taking out the overall state award in December, being recognised in the national finals was a great honour.
“It is a testament to the local progress and innovation we’ve been working hard to deliver,” Mrs Kirkland said.
“These initiatives demonstrate our commitment to creating a more sustainable future for our region, through the interconnected pathways outlined in our Environmental Sustainability Strategy. ....

The report also states council are looking at opportunities to secure the township’s water supply security.
Opportunities include new water storages constructed, pipelines to augment supply to Mount Morgan, making safe use of the abundant water supply in the mine pit and the potential for a pumped hydro-electric scheme.
Consultation with the Mount Morgan community on these options is expected to commence within the next couple of months.
The Mount Morgan community has been congratulated on their continued waterwise behaviour with average annual residential water usage per property in Mount Morgan almost 50 per cent lower than that in Rockhampton in recent years. ....

Sunny future for Glenmore Water Treatment Plant
Construction of a solar energy facility at Glenmore Water Treatment Plant is set to start in the next few months after Rockhampton Regional Council awarded the construction contract to Australia’s leading solar energy provider, Solgen Energy, earlier this week.
Mayor Tony Williams said he couldn’t wait to see the $2.6m project get started.
“Here at Rockhampton Regional Council we are serious about building a sustainable future, and this is a great stride in that direction,” said Mayor Williams.
“Back in the 2018 budget we created the Sustainable Rockhampton Investment Fund to support initiatives that will deliver a cleaner, greener future for the region, and building this solar facility was something we really wanted to try and make happen. ....
