Temporary visas for asylum seekers are no solution

Anna Kingston from the Refugee Action Collective said temporary visas had first been suggested by One Nation’s Pauline Hanson. The then Liberal minister for immigration Philip Ruddock initially rejected the idea as “unconscionable”, but then introduced temporary protection visas (TPVs) in 1999.
More recently, refugees have been given bridging visas, which are usually for three or five years. Various conditions are often imposed, including restrictions on work, study, education or access to Medicare. The visas also come with a “code of conduct” which makes it difficult for asylum seekers to speak out.
Other refugees have been given Safe Haven Enterprise Visas, which require them to work in the countryside. ....

Defence fund appeal for Jock Palfreeman

Palfreeman was unjustly imprisoned in Bulgaria in 2007 on trumped up charges, after he went to the aid of two Roma boys who were being attacked by a gang of Nazi hooligans. He was also attacked, but later charged with the murder of one of the attackers.

However, the Bulgarian authorities seized his passport, refusing to allow him to leave the country, and appealed his release. He beat this unconstitutional attempt to re-convict him.
Now, Bulgarian authorities are trying to expel and ban him from Bulgaria and the EU, based on the sham murder conviction. ....

Vigil for Biloela family

Tamil Refugee Council member Barath Vidhyapathy told the vigil that Priya and Nades had fled persecution and danger in Sri Lanka. They had experienced freedom in Biloela, but it had been snatched away .
Vidhyapathy said that Tamils had suffered genocide under Gotabaya Rajapaksa, who is now the president of Sri Lanka. This was a reference to the massacre of tens of thousands of Tamils in 2009, when Rajapaksa was defence secretary.
Vidhyapathy said that the war is now over, but torture is not.
Messages were read out from the family. Priya and Nades thanked those who are supporting their struggle for freedom. Priya said: The love and support I feel from outside keeps me strong. ....

Medevac refugee is 'really happy' to be released from Kangaroo Point

Back in February, Hossein told me he considered himself lucky to be determined a refugee by the Australian Border Force as part of Operation Sovereign Borders.
“I passed the interview and the rules which decide who is a genuine refugee. Many people from my country got negative statements. I was one of the lucky people who received a positive statement; it means I cannot be sent back to my country, back to danger.
