In celebration of International Day of Nurses on Thursday, the Joint Trade Union Movement (JTUM) called on the government and Ministry of Health to use the occasion to think about issues such as poor working conditions, inadequate staffing, unsettled wages and salaries negotiations, outstanding arrears, shortage of personal protective equipment and other matters plaguing nurses.
In a release, JTUM said since the cries of nurses continue to fall on deaf ears the union decided it would use the occasion of International Day of Nurses to renew its call to the government to fix existing issues.

The Joint Trade Union Movement (JTUM) has expressed anger at the attitude of Perenco Trinidad and Tobago’s management in dealing with the COVID-19 outbreak on two of its platforms and at its threat to discipline workers should they disclose any information on the incident to any third party, including the media.
In a statement issued last evening, JTUM said the threat letter and other correspondences issued to workers by the oil and gas company was “a clear indication of this company’s intent to hide, undermine and coverup any wrong with regards to the handling of COVID-19 cases found on the various platforms.”

The Banking, Insurance and General Workers Union (BIGWU) has written to Dr Roshan Parasram, Chief Medical Officer (CMO) at the Ministry of Health, asking him to intervene in the situation at offshore platforms belonging to energy company Perenco, where several workers have contracted COVID-19.
In the correspondence signed by Acting President Mario Als and which was shared with workers and the media BIGWU calls on the CMO
“to investigate and determine whether Perenco has met the required standards to ensure not only the health, safety and well-being of their employees, but also the public at large”.
