Corruption charges cast shadows over efforts to upgrade Malawi's water systems | D+C

Malawi’s water crisis – originally caused by droughts, flooding and population growth – is being worsened by rampant corruption in awarding contracts to upgrade sanitation systems.
Despite decades of clean water efforts, one-third of Malawians still lack access to clean water, and more than half lack decent toilets, according to WaterAid, a UK-registered charity. Some 60% of the population dig boreholes in search of water and 8% drink from unprotected wells, according to Malawi’s Statistics Office.
The government’s two decades of efforts to bring clean water to all have stalled, partly due to the effects of climate change, which in turn brought flooding and droughts in different parts of the country. But the failure can also be traced to corruption in awarding contracts for upgrading water systems. ....

Lawyer for Fisd directors files for discharge of alleged fraud case: State asks 30 days to complete investigations

Foundation for Irrigation and Sustainable Development (Fisd) Limited lawyer, Gift Nankhuni, on Friday, March 5, asked the Lilongwe Senior Resident Magistrate Court to discharge a case involving four Fisd directors, arguing the State “is not serious and ready to prosecute the case”.

However, prosecutor Levi Mangani, asked the court to give the State 30 more days so it would “wind up” its investigations on the matter.
Senior Resident Magistrate Shyreen Chirwa has since accepted the State’s plea and adjourned hearing of the case to 6 April, 2021. ....

Malawi government is at fault for failing to commerce the fraud charges levelled again four Foundation for Irrigation and Sustainable Development (FISD) Limited directors two months after their releases on bail.

Nankhuni: This is very unfair for just arresting individuals for malice to tarnish their company’s image that it loses business
Since FISD directors namely Frank Mwenechanya, Arthur Mpama, Moses Chirambo and Kondwani Nanchukwa were released on bail on November 13,2020, the State prosecutors have failed to show up at court with formal charges as expected on the way the four were arrested ....
