School Board To Discuss Mask Mandate Tonight

ATLANTIC â The Atlantic School Board will again discuss its mask mandate tonight after Governor Kim Reynolds set health guidelines that will expire at midnight.
Last week, the board extended its mask mandate until the end of the semester â Dec. 22 â with the provision that it would revisit the issue if Reynolds set new guidelines that may impact the mandate.
The board approved the mandate in October after receiving numerous comments on the issue, including a letter from the Cass County Board of Health that advised the board to implement the mandate immediately. The board previously did not have a mandate, but encouraged face coverings, however, state health guidelines on the use of masks changed that month. Under the new recommendations, if people were wearing masks correctly and interacted with someone who contracted COVID-19, the person who was not sick did not have to be quarantined. Board Considers Ways To Reward Staff Beyond Bonuses

ATLANTIC â The Atlantic School Board considered different ideas to reward its staff for their hard work during the coronavirus pandemic, but it wasnât likely going to be a cash bonus as Board Member Nick Hunt suggested during a meeting last month.
School Board President Jenny Williams said during Wednesdayâs board meeting that she and Atlantic Superintendent Steve Barber discussed what legally the board could do to reward staff, and discovered their options were limited.
âSteve and I had a conversation (with staff) about bonuses, and what we can legally do according to our policies. We found out there was not much we could do. But we could provide a meal if it was tied into a (professional development) day,â Williams said. ....

School Board Extends Mask Mandate

ATLANTIC â The Atlantic School Board approved extending its mask mandate until the end of the semester â Dec. 22 â but agreed to meet again next Wednesday to revisit it because of Governor Kim Reynolds new health guidelines that end Dec. 16. Another concern was that some students were under performing or failing classes since they started remote learning.
The district originally encouraged the use of masks and face coverings, but approved a 30 day mask mandate in October, after receiving numerous comments on the issue, including a letter from the Cass County Board of Health that advised the board to implement the mandate immediately. State guidelines regarding the use of masks and quarantining changed that month- which stated anyone wearing a mask who comes in contact with someone who has tested positive for COVID-19 does not need to be quarantined- which spurred the board to consider and approve the mandate.
