Council’s reinforced its drive to strengthen the region’s tourism economy by renewing the City’s partnership with Tourism Greater Geelong and The Bellarine (TGGB) and neighbouring councils for another four years.
Figures presented to the Council during tonight’s meeting reveal, that despite the COVID-19 pandemic, the tourism industry is still expected to inject $763 million into the region in the 2021 financial year.
It directly employs 7,551 people and supports more than 2,600 businesses.
Due to the pandemic and changing travel restrictions, our region’s tourism economy is now largely driven by day trips and short breaks with visitors from Victoria visiting friends and relatives, leading to busier weekends and slower weekdays. ....

A new inclusive playspace in Rippleside for people of all abilities is one step closer with the Greater Geelong Council endorsing the concept plans last night, following community consultation.
Council has partnered with Variety – The Children’s Charity to deliver the world-class Rippleside Inclusive Playspace, that will attract both local families and those from across Victoria.
The flagship playground will provide fun and challenging experiences for all children through a fenced play area incorporating multi-sensory and natural play elements and a tree top walk with views across the bay. ....

The Greater Geelong Council will approach the Victorian Government about opening state school playgrounds and outdoor sporting facilities for community use outside of school hours.
As a result of a successful notice of motion from Councillor Eddy Kontelj during Tuesday night’s meeting, the Council will start a conversation with the state in the hope of gaining improved access to recreational facilities for young people living close to schools.
Cr Kontelj said the Council provided a wide range of recreational facilities across the region, including parks, playgrounds, sports courts and playing fields. But, he said, school facilities would provide the most convenient expanded option for some residents. ....

Council has last night endorsed a submission to the Surf Coast Distinctive Area and Landscape public consultation, as the declared area includes Mount Duneed and Breamlea in the Greater Geelong municipality.
The Surf Coast was declared a Distinctive Area and Landscape (DAL) by the Victorian Government in 2019, with the aim of permanently protecting the area from over-development and preserving its unique environment, landscape and lifestyle.
The declaration covers a small area of Breamlea and the area north of the Surf Coast and Greater Geelong municipal boundary at Mount Duneed Road, taking in Mount Duneed up to the Armstrong Creek Urban Growth Boundary. This northern boundary includes the Thompson Valley green break between the urban areas of Armstrong Creek and Torquay. ....
