The work is being funded by $3.5 million from the Environment Ministry’s Jobs for Nature fund, about $1 million from the Greater Wellington Council and a smaller sum from the Department of Conservation. Project lead Kereana Sims from the council says as well as creating jobs, the project is about restoring mana to hapū and iwi. About 30 jobs will be created over the next five years to restore at least 30 hectares of wetland through indigenous planting, and to control pests across 1000 hectares of wetlands and surrounding land. ....

It accidentally discharged five or six-thousand litres in March last year, which ran into Seaview Marina and stormwater network. Greater Wellington Council charged the company - and it s been handed a 90-thousand dollar fine in the District Court. Judge Dwyer says it was the result of gross negligence and significant failures. He says it s only good luck there was no significant ecological impact, like the fact it happened after penguin breeding season. ....

The company eNZoil (NZ) Ltd, which takes waste transformer oil and refines it into a usable product, discharged the oil, which then ran into the Seaview Marina, on March 17 and 18, 2019. Greater Wellington Council laid charges against eNZoil, which appeared before Judge Dwyer in the Wellington District Court on Wednesday and was fined $90,000 for the offence. ....
