TAUNTON In February, the Dighton-Rehoboth Regional School District instituted a new policy regarding webcams during remote learning. Children are now required to keep their cameras on during remote learning if the teacher so asks. While some school community members think this change will positively impact students academic performance, others say they believe it could be detrimental to learning for some students. D-R Superintendent Anthony Azar said one of the main reasons the district made the policy change was to make it easier for teachers to check on students social and emotional well-being. Superintendent Dr. Anthony Azar made the announcement in a letter to parents. The weeks leading up to holiday break have been increasingly difficult due to the community spread of COVID-19. We have had to close all school buildings because of the impact of the virus, the letter said. We have identified an increase in COVID related absences due to illness and mandated quarantine periods. In an effort to provide consistency for students, staff, and families to begin 2021, we have decided to implement a full remote learning model for the week of January 4th. From Jan. 4 to 8, all cohorts will move to remote learning, with no in-person programs. In-person learning will resume Jan. 11. ....
