Wellington heritage-listed building suffers damage after burst pipe

A heritage-listed building in central Wellington has suffered cracks to an original stained glass window after roading contractors busted a pipe.
The burst saw a high-pressure freshwater geyser erupt yesterday afternoon outside the Marjoribanks Street building, which is part of the Apollo Lodge Motel.
The building was designed in 1904 by architect Thomas Turnbull, who was behind Wellington s St John s Church and the Old Bank arcade.
Motel owner Vicki Matias said four windows on the upper level have been cracked, and the stained glass window will need replacing.
She said she will talk to the contractor about repairs. ....

A motel’s windows are the latest victim of Wellington’s water woes after yet another unexpected geyser burst forth from a central city road when contractors accidently severed a drinking water pipe. ....

Though workers were called to deal with the problem, it was not mentioned on the website of Wellington Water. However the Wellington City Council did know what was happening and at 4.15 it explained:
A contractor has hit a small pipe (20mm) while servicing a building. Residents still have water and it should be repaired within the next hour or so.
The DomPost reports that Apollo Lodge Motel manager Vikram Kaushal said four of his windows were cracked when stones were thrown into the air along with a stream of water after roading contractors damaged a 20-millimetre service pipe. ....
