AJK elections: War of words picking up pace

ISLAMABAD: The war of words has intensified between the ruling PTI and main opposition parties after the conclusion of the elections in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) in which the PTI got a simple majority.
AJK Prime Minister Raja Farooq Haider said while talking to a private news channel that the AJK polls were stolen through money laundering. He said a federal minister openly distributed money before the elections and no action was taken against him. He said the PTI did not follow the directions of the AJK Election Commission. He said the Election Commission ordered expulsion of a federal minister from AJK, but the prime minister brought him to public rally in open defiance. He said such practices are damaging for democracy. ....

ISLAMABAD: Upsets are not being ruled out in Sunday’s 11th general elections to the Azad Jammu & Kashmir Legislative Assembly (AJKLA), with close fights expected in at least a dozen constituencies where prime ministerial candidates are trying their luck.
Simultaneously, the contests for 12 seats of Kashmiri refugees settled in Pakistan evoke immense interest and attention as any political party winning in most of these constituencies will land in a position to clinch the top executive slot in AJK. Only a few thousand votes would suffice to bag a seat. Traditionally, the provincial governments have a lot of influence in such elections. ....

About 44 per cent of people in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) think Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) will win the elections on July 25, according to a survey conducted by Gallup Pakistan.
As far as other political parties are concerned, the survey-which was carried out in all 10 districts of AJK-suggested that 12 per cent of people in the region think Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) will win, whereas only nine per cent expect Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) to come out on top. ....
