GARRETT â Lakewood Parkâs first four innings were just too much to overcome. Junior Megan Knox and freshman Grace Merkel each went deep to lead the Panthersâ 20-hit attack in a 15-9 win over Garrett May 18. Merkle finished with four hits â lacking just a triple for the cycle â stole a base, scored three times and drove in two. Knox had three hits and scored three times. Senior Madison Miller connected for three doubles, two runs and drove in five. The Panthers improved to 7-11 with the win. The Panthers struck for five runs in the first, behind singles from Mackenzie Shepherd, Samantha Schlotter, Merkle and Vinnie Talarico. Knox and Miller had doubles. ....
LEO â Garrett and Leoâs baseball teams split a doubleheader May 8. The Railroaders won the first game 7-5. The Class 3A No. 2 Lions won the second game 15-5. In the opener, Leo led 3-1 after two innings, but Garrett scored three times each in the fourth and fifth innings. Kail Baughman pitched a complete game for the Railroaders, striking out seven, walking one and allowing six hits. Of Leoâs five runs, only two were earned. Garrett made five errors and Leo made six in the opening game. At the plate, Baughman and Graham Kelham had doubles. Jacob Molargik had two hits, driving in three runs. Kelham also had two hits. Gage Smith drove in a pair of runs. ....
First-year Garrett softball coach Julie DePew is no different. After what was supposed to be her first year in 2020 was wiped out due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the new Garrett mentor canât wait for the season to begin. The Railroaders will take the field the first time today, April 6, at East Noble. Their first home game is Friday against Bellmont. Both games start at 5 p.m. While DePew has coached varsity softball at other schools, nothing can beat leading your alma mater. âThis whole program means a lot to me. I graduated from here, and my senior year (1987) was the first season for Garrett High School softball,â she said. âIt means a lot. Iâm real big on the pride and tradition, and I want to instill that into the kids.â ....
