Strategic discussions on ways to promote and protect the rights of LGBTQI+ people are among the actions the government plans to take in response to a spate of hate crimes. As at 29 June 2021, there were 42 pending cases of hate crimes against those communities: 30 murders and 12 rapes.

Public Protector finds Cape Town court did not fail murdered mom, daughter

The Public Protector investigated the claim following a request by Justice and Constitutional Development Deputy Minister John Jeffery.
It has now dedicated a systemic investigation into the challenges that plague the justice value chain to fight gender-based violence, in honour of Altecia and Raynecia Kortje.
Allegations that the Bellville Magistrate’s Court, days before the murder of a Cape Town mom and her daughter, turned away the woman seeking a Protection Order, have been found to be without merit following an investigation by the Public Protector.
The killing of Altecia Kortje and her seven-year-old daughter Raynecia in Belhar last year has, however, seen the Public Protector’s office dedicate one of its key projects for the year in their honour – a systemic investigation into the challenges that plague the justice value chain to fight gender-based violence. ....
