Alternate School Programme and the Humanitarian Imperative

By Dapo Bruce
On Tuesday January 26, 2021, President Muhammadu Buhari inaugurated an 18-member Presidential Steering Committee on the Alternate School Programme, (ASP). The President charged the committee to coordinate and lead the deployment of a National Plan which will address the issue of out-of-school children in the country.
Sadiya Umar Farouq, Honourable Minister of Humanitarian Affairs Disaster Management and Social Development was named co-chair alongside Mallam Adamu Adamu, Honourable Minister of Education.
The choice of Farouq as co-chair is instructive when the mandate of the steering committee is taken into consideration.
The Alternate School Programme has as its mandate to improve access to education for all Nigerian children in alignment with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG-4) which aims to “ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all”. ....

"13.5m out of school Nigerian children…Third most terrorised nation on Earth…" – Atiku's claims fact-checked

Sun Apr 04 2021
A former Nigeria’s Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, recently made claims in a post on his verified Facebook page in which he proffered solutions on how to help the present government salvage the economy.
Daily Trust on Sunday verifies three of the claims made by the top politician:
Claim 1: Nigeria has 13.5 million out-of-school children
Claim 2: Nigeria is the third most terrorised nation on earth
Claim 3: NLNG delivered $18.3bn dividends to government in 20 years (ending 2020)

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar claimed that Nigeria has 13.5 million out-of-school children.
VERDICT. Misleading. The claim that Nigeria has a 13.5 million population of out-of-school children is misleading judging from the revelation of the Minister of Education, Adamau Adamu that the figure had dipped to 6.95 million since May 2020. At best, Atiku’s claim was true as of 2018. ....

Int'l Education Day: Adefulire commends Buhari over reduction in out of-school-children -

By Joseph Erunke
SENIOR Special Assistant to the President on Sustainable Development Goals, SDGs, Princess Adejoke Orelope Adefulire, has commended President Muhammadu Buhari on the drastic reduction in the number of out-of-school children in the country.
Adefulire’s commendation came against the backdrop of the recent revelation that the number of out-of-school children in Nigeria has reduced from a 10.1million in 2019 to 6.95 million in 2020.
Recall that the Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu had disclosed during his ministry’s annual press briefing that the reduction was through the Federal Government’s Better Education Service Delivery for All (BESDA) initiative.
Reacting to the development in a statement she issued to mark the 2020 International Education Day, Princess Orelope Adefulire said the reduction in the number of out-of-school children was a reflection of the importance attached to education by the President Muhammadu Buhari administrati ....
