COVID-19 daily tally surges past the 23,000-mark


167 deaths recorded; 6,291 cases in Chennai
Tamil Nadu’s COVID-19 daily tally hit a new high with 23,310 people testing positive on Wednesday. The State reported 167 deaths (73 in private and 94 in government hospitals), the highest number on a single day since the start of the pandemic.
The Health Department bulletin listed a few deaths that had occurred in the previous week.
58 deaths in Chennai
The State’s toll rose to 14,779. Chennai reported 58 fatalities while 16 persons died in Chengalpattu. Kanniyakumari, Madurai and Ranipet accounted for eight deaths each. The dead included three persons aged in their 20s and 12 persons in their 30s.
Among the deceased was a 25-year-old man from Chennai, who was admitted to the Government Stanley Medical College Hospital on May 1. He had no co-morbidities and died on May 4 due to respiratory failure, lower respiratory tract infection and clinical COVID-19 pneumonia. ....

Authorities swing into action to augment capacity in five hospitals
Almost all Intensive Care Unit (ICU) beds in the five government hospitals in Chennai are filled, while oxygen supported beds are running low, pushing hospital authorities to set up additional facilities.
As per the data on bed status available on https://tncovidbeds. tnega.org/, only eight oxygen-supported beds out of 1,766 and one ICU bed out of 919 were available in the five government hospitals in the city. ....

Govt. accelerates work to provide additional oxygen beds


Process is set to be completed by the first week of May
The Public Works Department has accelerated work to provide oxygen pipelines for nearly 12,770 additional COVID-19 beds being created across the State.
The project is expected to address the increasing demand for healthcare facilities to cope with the second wave of the infection.
Work to provide nearly 3,000 additional beds with oxygen lines has been completed. Most have been immediately put to use. The department plans to complete the entire project by the first week of May to provide vital infrastructure for patients in need of oxygen support.
PWD officials said additional facilities were being created at 168 hospitals, including district headquarters and taluk hospitals and government medical college hospitals as emergency works. ....

13,625 people discharged after treatment; Chennai accounts for 4,250 cases and 35 fatalities
The State recorded 15,684 fresh cases of COVID-19 on Monday, taking its tally to 10,97,672. As many as 1,07,145 people are currently under treatment in Tamil Nadu.
So far, 9,05,115 people in the 13-60 age group, 1,52,795 senior citizens and 39,762 children below the age of 12 have been infected.
 
As many as 94 persons succumbed to the infection 50 in government hospitals and 44 in private facilities, taking the toll to 13,651. ....
