A Papatoetoe bottle store owner ordered to pay close to $50,000 for exploiting a migrant worker has had another $15,000 added to the charge for legal costs.
Basra and Khella Ltd, trading as Super Liquor Papatoetoe, was ordered by the Employment Relations Authority (ERA) to pay $18,000 in penalties and more than $28,000 in arrears to a former worker. ....

An Auckland bottle store has been fined $18,000 for breaching a migrant worker s rights.
The employee had to work six days a week and often do unpaid 12-hour shifts.
The Employment Relations Authority also ordered Super Liquor Papatoetoe, or Basra and Khella Limited, to pay more than $28,000 in arrears to the former worker.
Because the company s sole director Ravindra Basra kept poor records, the authority relied on the worker s public transport records, time-stamped photographs and purchase receipts from neighbouring businesses to prove his claims.
The breaches happened in 2017 and 2018, and the authority said Super Liquor had since taken steps to improve its compliance with employment standards. ....

A bottle store in Papatoetoe is the latest bottle store to be penalised and ordered to pay arrears for exploiting a migrant worker by breaching their employment rights.
Basra and Khella Limited, trading as Super Liquor Papatoetoe, has been ordered by the Employment Relations Authority to pay $18,000 in penalties and more than $28,000 in arrears to a former worker. The breaches include more than $25,000 in unpaid wages, and more than $3,000 in unpaid holidays and leave allowances.
Due to inaccurate record keeping by Basra and Khella’s sole director and employer Ravinda Basra, the Authority’s determination relied on the worker’s testimony along with his public transport records, time stamped photographs and purchase receipts from neighbouring businesses to prove his claims. ....
