Editorial — Diving in: Town of Potsdam will assume all control of Postwood Beach


Information from the past two weeks regarding recreational opportunities in the town and village of Potsdam brought both cheers and jeers.
The good news is that the beach at Postwood Park in Hannawa Falls will open this season. The Town Board announced June 23 that it will assume “full financial and operational responsibility” of the beach. This resolved a concern that the beach would not open this year.
Trey T. Smutz, director of recreation for the village of Potsdam, told members of the Potsdam Village Board of Trustees on June 21 that Postwood Beach was unsafe and under-staffed. He said the joint town/village recreation commission didn’t have the necessary resources to clean the area and operate it; the beach is littered with glass and debris. On June 11, members of the Town Board received a letter from Smutz stating the beach would remain closed. ....

Editorial — A good trade: Potsdam/Market Square Mall land swap to benefit downtown


A proposed agreement between the village of Potsdam™ and the owner of Market Square Mall would benefit both parties.
The plan calls for parcels of land to be swapped. This would remove some obstacles for the Downtown Riverwalk Trail project and create a new street in Potsdam.
“Village Administrator Gregory Thompson detailed the proposal during [the Feb. 22] Village Board meeting. He noted that Market Square Mall owner Brooks Washburn expressed interest in exchanging a number of small parcels of land adjacent to the complex with village-owned property, which would improve traffic flow and grant the village riverfront property needed for its ongoing Riverwalk project without the need for an easement,” according to a story published Thursday by the Watertown Daily Times. “The village would also take responsibility for a tract of land in the mall’s existing parking area, which would connect the existing Depot and Raymond streets from the north and sout ....
