Last highway re-opens as work continues on local roads

Waka Kotahi NZTA managed to reopen the SH6 route from Nelson to Blenheim about 5pm on Sunday, following heavy rain and flooding on Saturday.
By about midday on Monday crews had reopened the route connecting Lewis Pass, SH7 at Springs Junction to SH65 through the Shenandoah and onto SH6 into Nelson.
The Lower Buller Gorge route into Westport also re-opened on Monday.
But while roads were reopeing, Waka Kotahi warned motorists journeys might be slower than usual, as crews continued to work repairing damage, Forrester said. ....

Freedom camping infringements increase in Golden Bay, hostility rises


“I don t know if it s just because the people are New Zealanders and feel that they have more of a right to use the land than others, that s part of it. I think it may be, as well, an aspect of the fact that people have been cooped up and suddenly allowed to go free, and then they get told they’re not allowed to be where they are.”
However, there was no excuse for such hostility. An assault on an officer was “particularly nasty” and police were working on a prosecution, Humphries this month told councillors.
“The closure of the two non-self-contained sites [Waitapu Bridge and Taupata Point] there have resulted in freedom campers bomb bursting everywhere . and we have issued a lot more freedom camping infringement notices in Golden Bay than previous years because people are going where they shouldn t be going,” Humphries said. ....
