The Algarve Regional Coordination and Development Commission (CCDR) has issued an unfavourable Environmental Impact Declaration (EIS) for an agricultural project to produce avocados in a 128 hectare orchard in Lagos.
In the CCDR/Algarve opinion, to which Lusa had access, the entity justifies the opinion with the impact on groundwater resources, the cumulative effects with other occupations in the surrounding area - namely golf and citrus farms - and requires the promoter to rebuild the Espiche stream destroyed during implementation work on the farm.

The environmental associations Zero and Regenearte have called for the avocado farming project in the municipality of Lagos (Algarve) to be made unfeasible, considering that its installation is unsustainable and violates the rules of land planning.
The project promoted by the company Frutineves foresees the use of an area of 128 hectares for the production of avocados, in the municipality of Lagos, district of Faro.
The leader of the Zero association, Pedro Horta, told Lusa news agency that associations contested the project because they do not understand how an environmental impact assessment is promoted, when what is under consideration is already practically in place”. ....
