Industry leaders expect lockdown will last till May-end: CARE Ratings

A recent survey by CARE Ratings shows that a majority of industry leaders perceive lockdown to be a solution for the raging coronavirus situation across India with a sizeable number expecting it to extend only till May-end.
They also considered the current lockdown to be less stringent that last year. The optimism over India s vaccination drive seems encouraging. A total of 305 people were interviewed between April 27 to May 11 with respondents ranging from manufacturing, financial services, non-financial services, power and others.
At least 80 percent of the respondents expect consumer demand for non-essentials as well as investment demand to be severely impacted. Almost the same proportion believe non-performing assets (NPA) situation to worsen in coming months. ....

New rules from the governments of Maharashtra and Assam have created additional hurdles for e-commerce and transport operators, including those delivering food, groceries and other essential supplies.
The Maharashtra government, in a notification on Wednesday, said drivers and helpers of all goods carriers entering the state must carry a negative RT-PCR certificate that is less than 48 hours old, and that it will be valid for only seven days. The new rules also say that a cargo carrier cannot have more than two people. ....

In what appeared to be a smear campaign against US e-commerce giant Amazon, several users on Twitter alleged on Sunday that it was violating lockdown norms in Maharashtra by shipping non-essential items.
The topic “Amazon Defies Protocols” was trending with just under 4,000 tweets late on Sunday night on the micro-blogging platform, with several users supporting local traders who had been forced to shutter their businesses during the ongoing lockdown-like restrictions in the state. ....

The guidelines say that the state would allow delivery of “all goods through e-commerce and home delivery” without making any distinction between essential and non-essential products as states such as Maharashtra, Delhi and a few others have done over the past few weeks.
“They’ve (Karnataka government) allowed both e-commerce and shops to function through home deliveries. This is what we’ve been asking for all along,” said a senior executive at a leading e-commerce marketplace. “This will allow consumers to stay safe at home.”
Apart from not imposing curbs on e-commerce, the state also said that it was encouraging 24x7 deliveries of essential items to “minimise the movement of individuals outside their homes”, while restricting the operations of shops selling groceries, fruits and vegetables, dairy products and meats to just four hours a day 6 am to 10 am. ....
