Evacuated Marlborough residents allowed to return from midday when highway reopens

Spring Creek and Tuamarina households wait for State Highway 1 to reopen after severe flooding.
Residents in the evacuated Marlborough settlements of Spring Creek, Tuamarina and Lower Wairau can return to their homes from midday.
The Marlborough District Council said State Highway 1, including the Wairau River bridge is also expected to re-open from midday. Evacuees are being reunited with vehicles stranded along the highway between Picton and Blenheim. Stranded vehicles will also be removed by police if the owner cannot be located or the vehicle is damaged.
State Highway 6 between Renwick and Havelock is not expected to open until mid-afternoon at the earliest. ....

Heavy Rainfall Expected To Bring Flooding To Marlborough

The best plan for the weekend is staying home and off the
roads, particularly tomorrow, Saturday. Very heavy rain and
strong winds are expected over the next 24 hours, resulting
in high river levels in the Pelorus and Wairau rivers and
their tributaries.

flooded and impassable:

Caution urged as strong winds, rain expected in Marlborough


“Right now it looks like it will be raining up in the valleys towards the North West. The Marlborough Sounds is also under a rain band at the moment.
“That s all meant to hang around for the next wee while, overnight into Saturday. The second half of Saturday looks like there’s a possibility it will dry out, but I wouldn’t say that’s quite set in stone.”

Preparedness is key in the face of tsunami threat

On Friday 5 March, three large earthquakes struck off the north east coast of New Zealand.  The last of these was a magnitude 8.1 earthquake on the Kermadec Islands (around 1,000 km north east of New Zealand), triggering a tsunami threat for parts of Northland and Aotea / Great Barrier Island. 
While most Aucklanders were told to stay away from beaches and off the water, the 936 residents of Aotea / Great Barrier Island were asked to evacuate immediately to higher ground.
Island residents are well aware of the risks that come with living on one of the Auckland region’s most remote spots which means they also know what to do when disaster strikes.  When the tsunami threat was issued by the National Emergency Management Agency, the island’s Emergency Response Team (ERT) swung into action.  ....
