THE third wave of Covid-19 pandemic across the country has forced federal and provincial governments to adopt stringent measures including lockdown. For taking action against violators of restrictions placed by the government, different laws have assumed importance and have often been invoked by the administration.
In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, a mix of old and new laws have been utilised by the provincial government and district administration to tackle the pandemic.
Among the new laws, the most important one is Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Epidemic Control and Emergency Relief Act, 2020, which was passed by the provincial assembly on July 17, 2020. This law was first introduced in form of an ordinance in May 2020. ....

Health minister gets bail in SOP violation case - Newspaper

PESHAWAR: A local court on Friday granted health minister Taimur Saleem Jhagra bail in a case relating to the violation of coronavirus-related standard operating procedures.
Mr Jhagra appeared before special magistrate Ahteshamul Haq, who granted him bail until May 17 on the condition of producing two surety bonds of Rs50,000 each.
The Sarband police had registered an FIR against the minister and management of a local restaurant on April 26 for hosting an iftar dinner in violation of the Covid-19 SOPs.
The lawyer for Mr Jhagra told the magistrate that the case against his client was registered in a hurry as he was neither the restaurant owner nor did he use his influence to open it. ....

PESHAWAR: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government is in a fix as it has yet to decide whether to take action against Minister for Health and Finance Taimur Saleem Jhagra for violating the Covid-19 standard operating procedures (SOPs).
The provincial home secretary and attorney general were scheduled to hold a meeting Tuesday night to discuss the issue.
It is to be noted that the KP government has banned all public gatherings and dining at restaurants.
The Covid-19 pandemic has particularly hit hard the districts of Peshawar and Mardan with the steep rise in the number of new cases and deaths. ....

The Covid-19 pandemic has particularly hit hard the districts of Peshawar and Mardan with the steep rise in the number of new cases and deaths. It is common knowledge that the real numbers are much higher than what is being reported officially. The FIR was lodged at the Sarband Police Station for violating sections 6 through 17 of the KP Epidemic Control and Emergency Relief Act 2020 after photos of an Iftar party featuring the minister went viral on social media on Monday. ....
