Eesti Ekspress appealed the MM Grupp s call for damages and a printed refutation of an article which appeared in April last year which said that the company was to be broken up, after failing to file an annual financial report.
Harju County Court rejected Eesti Ekspress case, ruling on Tuesday that the publication should issue a public refutation of the article, on the grounds that delays in submitting accounts do not lead to compulsory dissolution of a company, or run the risk of that happening.
This meant that the article and its headline in particular were libelous, the court found. ....

Attorney's book on 2005 murder prompts libel accusation

JANESVILLE
A Janesville attorney who wrote a book about a shocking 2005 murder case is being sued for saying the justice system convicted the wrong person.
Roger Merry self-published âLies for her Masterâ last year. The bookâs first line accuses David Sidoff of murdering Ardelle Sturzenegger of Janesville.
Sturzenegger was an 88-year-old homeless woman from Janesville who was known to carry a large amount of cash. She was shot, and her body was found wrapped in a tarp on a Monticello property rented by a young couple, David and Mary Sidoff.
A jury in 2006 found Mary Sidoff, Davidâs then-wife, guilty of the murder. ....

A B.C. woman has won a defamation case and a sizable award in B.C. Supreme Court after numerous unfounded allegations against her were posted to Facebook and other printed sources.
While social media is rife with keyboard warriors and harsh accusations are spewed out daily on often the most innocuous of subject matters, this case serves as a reminder that what a person posts on a local community Facebook page can land them in serious trouble and be very costly.
In this case, the harsh, unfounded, and derogatory comments cost the perpetrator $30,000.
What is also striking about is the case is that the allegations weren’t seen by very many people, but the Justice still awarded a considerable amount of compensation citing the harm caused and how gossip spread quickly in the small community. ....

Australia s Attorney-General Christian Porter has launched a defamation action against the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) and journalist Louise Milligan, confirming he will go under oath to deny an historical rape allegation they aired.
The broadcaster aired allegations Porter raped a 16-year old in 1988, when he was 17, a claim he vigorously denies.
Milligan, a Four Corners reporter, broke the news of an anonymous letter outlining the unsubstantiated allegations had been sent to Prime Minister Scott Morrison, Labor frontbencher Penny Wong, and Greens senator Sarah-Hanson-Young. ....
