Twenty-two of the world s 30 most polluted cities are in India, with Delhi being ranked as the most polluted capital city globally, a new report said on Tuesday. The report is prepared by Swiss organisation, IQAir, in the form of the World Air Quality Report, 2020 , which has released globally. The report, however, shows that Delhi s air quality improved by approximately 15 per cent from 2019 to 2020. It said that despite the improvement, Delhi ranked as the 10th most polluted city and the top polluted capital city in the world. India continues to feature prominently at the top of the most polluted cities ranking, with 22 of the top 30 most polluted cities globally, the report said. ....

The report is based on PM2.5 data from 106 countries and uses ground-based monitoring stations operated by governmental agencies, local residents, non-profit organisations and companies. However, the report suggested that air quality in India improved in 2020 due to the countrywide lockdown, which led to a substantial decrease in traffic and industry activities. ....
Average levels of various pollutants, including PM10, PM2.5 and nitrogen dioxide, in Delhi last year were the lowest since 2014, according to the Delhi Economic Survey report. Government data also showed that average levels of the major pollutants in the city have been decreasing steadily over the years. The annual average concentrations of PM2.5, fine particulate matter that is about three per cent the diameter of a human hair and can lead to premature deaths from heart and lung diseases, decreased from 149 microgram per cubic meter (g/m3) in 2014 to 101 g/m3 in 2020, it said. The annual average of PM10 also decreased from 324 g/m3 in 2014 to 187 g/m3 in 2020, according to the Economic Survey report, tabled by Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia in the Delhi Assembly on Monday. ....
