Nearly three years after a sudden string of suicides shook the Ontario Provincial Police, the service’s commissioner and others say major and tangible progress is being made.
Expanded support and a changing culture are resulting in better care and fewer complaints to Ontario’s ombudsman, they say. ....

Offenders need to be close to home, says former youth detention centre exec

Over a month after the Ministry of Children and Youth Services announced it would be closing several youth detention centres across Ontario, several affected parties in the north are still left shaking their heads at the decision and wondering what’s next.
The closures came after years of significant decline in the rates of youth involved with the justice system, owing to the 2003 Youth Criminal Justice Act and the preventative measures it took to steer those aged 12-17 away from crime. In 2014, the ministry said that youth custody admissions within the province had dropped by 72 per cent since 2003, a trend that eventually resulted in many of the facilities’ beds going unused. The closures are expected to save the province roughly $40 million a year. ....
