UNEP and Google partner to hunt for plastic pollution with machine learning
Bangkok, 20 April 2021 – The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) today announced that it is working to fight plastic pollution using citizen science and machine learning, with technical advisory support from Google . With Google’s support, UNEP will create a new machine learning model that reveals a more detailed and accurate view of plastic pollution in the Mekong River.
One of the main challenges of fighting plastic pollution is determining how exactly it enters – or “leaks” – into bodies of water. Working in the Mekong region from 2019-2020, UNEP’s CounterMEASURE project, with the support of the Geoinformatics Center (GIC) at the Asian Institute of Technology, developed techniques of assessing plastic leakage into the Mekong River using geospatial data and images of plastic waste supplied by researchers and volunteers. ....

Manila [The Philippines], Apr 12 (ANI): Developing countries in Asia and the Pacific must reassess their approach and investment priorities to adopt sanitation >citywide inclusive sanitation (CWIS) to address the region s urban sanitation crisis, according to discussions on Monday at the Online sanitation-dialogue-2021 >ADB Sanitation Dialogue 2021.
Sanitation continues to be a huge unmet need in Asia and the Pacific despite the region s progress, said ADB Water Sector Group Chief Neeta Pokhrel.
About 1.2 billion people have no access to basic sanitation services and the region requires 53 billion dollars per year on average up to 2030 to finance and address the water and sanitation gap. ....

UNEP partners with local Korean governments to combat air pollution
The Republic of Korea has recently turned to some high-tech devices in its ongoing fight against air pollution.
Last month, 5G-enabled autonomous robots began rolling through an industrial complex in the country’s south to monitor air quality. This week, thousands of miles above them, a Korean satellite began offering real-time air quality data to the public.
The machines are the latest additions to a state-of-the-art arsenal the country has deployed to fight its notorious air pollution.
Now, a new partnership between the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the Republic of Korea’s Capital Metropolitan Area, which includes Seoul, Incheon and Gyeonggi province, will help officials expand their efforts to tackle air pollution and share their best practices with other regions suffering from poor air quality. ....
