At the Audubon: Discovering bird personalities | News, Sports, Jobs

Evidence of an American Robin eating Sumac.
Like so many others, I’ve spent more time this past year watching birds than I may ever have. Watching birds, whether in the wild or from your windows is the perfect socially distanced, stay-close-to-home activity.
One of my favorite bird-watching spots is the Staghorn Sumac (Rhus typhina) tree outside my office window. The tree sits above the bird feeders so there is a constant coming and going of birds. The clusters of red, fuzzy berries formed this year still cling to the tree and are a source of food for winter birds. I knew this weedy-looking tree had wildlife benefits. But who specifically did it benefit, I wondered?

Night skies are filled with more than just a moon | News, Sports, Jobs

CHELSEA JANDREAU
The moon may not be a star, but it is a recognizable subject in the night sky.
Take a look around. If asked you to point North, could you? Would you need to take out your phone and look it up, or could you use the context clues in the sky to figure it out? People have been trying to pinpoint where they are on this planet and figure out where they are going for centuries, and eventually the terms north, south, east and west popped up to lead people around the globe. Today there is always the handy compass to point you exactly 56 degrees to the northeast, but stop and think about the cycles of the sky and you don’t need a compass to find the general direction of north. The sun always rises in the east and sets in the west, so if you find the setting sun and stand with it to your left, you will be facing north. Keep standing there, and as the sun continues to set, other pinpricks of light start to pop up in the sky to help you find your way..

Go to Sweden virtually with Audubon Friday | News, Sports, Jobs

Jan 6, 2021
Three and a half years ago, naturalist and Jamestown native Mark Baldwin moved to the shores of Malaren, Sweden’s third-largest freshwater lake, near Stockholm, Sweden.
He has been exploring the forests and fields of the area ever since.
On Friday, Jan. 8, from 11 a.m. to noon, Baldwin will share stories and lessons in natural history from his Swedish journey, taking those taking part on a virtual tour of “The Nature of Sweden,” a First Friday presentation of Audubon Community Nature Center.
Baldwin spent his early years and most of his career in Jamestown. He now teaches science in an urban middle school and spends as much time as possible with his wife Ardy and their family, enjoying the forest near their home.

Nature, outdoors were bright spots of 2020 | News, Sports, Jobs

2020 was the year nature never closed while everything else did.
Nestled in the front of my Christmas tree there is a new ornament that I got just for 2020. It is a COVID ornament, but not the spiky COVID ball or the Santa with a mask on. My 2020 ornament is made of recycled steel and features two people hiking.
The things I most want to carry away from this year are things that have been ingrained on my heart since childhood. Nature is bigger than our human problems. The outdoors is mostly free to explore and never closed. Nature provides a steady stream of amazement that cannot be replicated inside.

Municipal Matters | News, Sports, Jobs

A few of the Third Street oak trees city workers are in the process of cutting down. Because of the potential danger and liability of the oak threes, with some being more than 100 years old, the city is cutting down 43 of them along Third Street.

Editor’s Note: The Post-Journal is looking back at the top stories of 2020 and the way they will shape the coming year. Today, 20 for 2020 looks at the municipal stories that were among the most-read in the newspaper this year.
It only seems like COVID-19 was the only topic in the news this year.

Reading the landscape | News, Sports, Jobs

Walking on an old road can lead to unexpected discoveries.
There was an oil painting hanging in my grandparent’s house of an old man. His skin was a warm brown and covered with lines. There were fine creases around the eyes from laughing or squinting in the sun. Curved grooves from his nose to the outside corner of his mouth ran deep from smiling. There were wrinkles across the forehead, often called worry lines. I imagined other dark marks to be scars from a long-ago injury.
I was intrigued by this face and so many others like it because of the story then could tell. Who was this man? What joys and tragedies happened in his life that were so strong they were etched in his physical being? A person’s face is a record of the events that shaped who they are.
