The Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament are leading the drive for reform of the European Semester process by including environmental and social sustainability objectives alongside economic goals, to improve the well-being of all. Today, the European Parliament, for the first time in this legislature, approved reports on the Annual Sustainable Growth Strategy 2021, from both the economic and the employment committees,Â sending a strong signal to the Commission and the Council on the need for reform.
Joachim Schuster, S&D MEP responsible for the European Semester in the economic and monetary affairs committee, said:
âIt is our ambition to transform the out-dated European Semester into a driver for change to build a sustainable and inclusive recovery by including social and environmental objectives for EU governments to deliver on. ....

Local MEP highlights gender inequality in Irish workforce in EU Parliament

Galway Bay fm newsroom – MEP for this region, Maria Walsh, has highlighted the ongoing gender inequality in the Irish workforce at the European Parliament.
Addressing today’s session, Midlands North-West MEP Walsh said one of the very first benefits of Ireland joining the European Union in 1973 was the abolishment of a law restricting the employment of married women.
However, she pointed out that almost 50 years later, significant gaps remain – with the pay gap at 14 percent and the pension gap at 30 percent.
Fine Gael MEP Walsh was contributing to a debate on a newly released report entitled “European Semester for economic policy coordination: Employment and Social Aspects in the Annual Sustainable Growth Strategy 2021”. ....

State aid: Commission prolongs and further expands Temporary Framework to support economy in context of coronavirus outbreak

The European Commission has decided to prolong until 31 December 2021 the State aid Temporary Framework adopted on 19 March 2020 to support the economy in the context of the coronavirus outbreak. The Commission has also decided to expand the scope of the Temporary Framework by increasing the ceilings set out in it and by allowing the conversion
of certain repayable instruments into direct grants until the end of next year.
Prolongation of the Temporary Framework. The Commission is continuously examining the need to further adapt the Temporary Framework. The Temporary Framework was set to expire on 30 June 2021, except for recapitalisation measures that could be granted until 30 September 2021. In view of the persistence and evolution of the coronavirus outbreak, today s amendment prolongs all measures set out in the Temporary Framework, including recapitalisation measures, until 31 December 2021. ....
