The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has warned that sentences for domestic violence offences are too lenient in the ACT, putting the Territory out of step with most other Australian jurisdictions.
Aggravated offences that increase the penalty for offending in a family violence context were necessary to tackle the “evil” crime, deputy director of public prosecutions Anthony Williamson wrote in a letter to the chairperson of the Victims Advisory Board, Richard Glenn. ....

Former Opposition Leader Alistair Coe has bid farewell to the Legislative Assembly today after formally tendering his resignation to Speaker Joy Burch.
Mr Coe first announced he would resign in January, after initially saying he would stay on despite the Canberra Liberals’ defeat at last year’s ACT election. He resigned the leadership which was won by Elizabeth Lee.
His resignation will trigger a countback of votes in his Gungahlin-based seat of Yerrabi, which will likely see former Liberal MLA James Milligan re-elected after losing his seat last year. ....

Canberra Liberals leader Elizabeth Lee has been nominated for the 2020 McKinnon Emerging Political Leader of the Year award for speaking out against sexual harassment and racism.
Ms Lee came out in June last year and said that she had been persistently sexually propositioned by former High Court judge Dyson Heydon at the 2013 University of Canberra law ball.
She chose to speak out about the incident after being inspired by the actions of the judge’s associates who came forward with allegations of sexual harassment by Mr Heydon. ....
