Surat: A BJP worker was arrested by Surat cyber-crime police for allegedly writing provocative posts aimed at instigating communal differences as well as against political leaders. On Sunday, a local court sent accused Nitesh Vanani to police custody till Tuesday.
Vanani’s arrest has, however, created an uproar among the BJP cadres with many ward-level office-bearers even threatening to resign. Many of them have even alleged that Vanani was arrested at the behest of a senior BJP leader in Surat. Many workers and supporters also wrote in support of Vanani on their social media profiles.
Police said that on they received a complaint from Vibha Chosla, a social worker, and lodged a complaint against Vanani on May 21. Cops nabbed him on Saturday. It was alleged that Vanani and his accomplices created Facebook profiles under different names and wrote abusive and provocative posts on the social media page. Police sub-inspector Arjun H.K., who has been facing allegations of harassing a Dalit youth and making him drink urine, has been suspended and the case handed over to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) for further probe.
Akshay M. Hakay, Superintendent of Police of Chikkamagaluru, on Sunday, informed presspersons that Western Range IGP Devajyoti Ray suspended the PSI and transferred him (on suspension) to Udupi district. The complaint registered against the police officer would be probed by the CID, he said. Besides that, the State government ordered a departmental inquiry into the incident by the Deputy Superintendent of Police of Puttur in Dakshina Kannada district. ....

Deputy sarpanch refuses to pay extortion money, shot | Rajkot News


Rajkot: A 50-year-old deputy sarpanch of a village in Jamnagar district was shot dead after he refused to pay extortion money to local goons who were threatening to harm his sand mining business.
According to the police, the victim Kantilal Malaviya, a resident of Balambha village in Jodiya taluka, was rushed to a hospital in Jamnagar where he succumbed to the bullet injuries.
Malaviya was a sand-mine lease holder. The accused had allegedly demanded extortion money and threatened to harm his business if he did not pay up.
Nilesh Malaviya, 38, a computer operator in Malaviya’s office, lodged a complaint against four persons including Ayyub Jasariya, Asgar Kamora and two unidentified persons. ....

Soota commits Rs 200 crores for medical research centre in Bengaluru

Serial entrepreneur Ashok Soota on Sunday announced Rs 200 crore funding to set up Skan medical research trust here for ageing and neurological disorders.
The not-for-profit trust will conduct research with partners and in-house. For neurological research, the trust has tied up with the Centre for Brain Research (CBR) at the premier Indian Institute of Science (IISc) in the city, said Soota in a statement here.
Soota, 78, is the co-founder of Happiest Minds Technologies Ltd and over 2 decades ago, co-founded software major MindTree after serving as an executive in global IT major Wipro.
Of the Rs 200-crore fund, Rs 100 crore will be for partners like CBR, St John s Hospital and state-run Nimhans in the city and IIT at Roorkee in Uttarkhand. ....
