Eco-energy without limits?

Eco-energy without limits?
Federal Laboratory for Materials Testing and Research
Dübendorf, St. Gallen und Thun, 11.05.2021 - Even a sustainable circular economy doesn't run without energy. Solar panels and wind farms, tidal and geothermal power plants: They all divert energy from energy fluxes that had remained untapped since time immemorial. The question is therefore: What part of these energy fluxes can mankind use for its own purposes without damaging the Earth's energy system? Empa researchers have developed an approach to estimate this.
The Earth has its limits. We are becoming more and more aware of this in view of the climate crisis, the increasing extinction of species and the littering of the oceans (and even space) as a result of human activity. In response, governments and institutions the world over are championing the concept of a circular economy. By closing material cycles, the environmental impacts associated with the extraction of raw materials shall be avoided and the waste problem solved. This approach is, however, not sufficient to build a sustainable society in and by itself, as it leaves the questions open of how much and how quickly materials can be cycled and what energy is used to power these cycles. After all, in a truly sustainable society, not only material flows but also energy flows must remain within the limits set by our home planet.

Regular virus tests can curb infection rates

Regular virus tests can curb infection rates
Federal Laboratory for Materials Testing and Research
Dübendorf, St. Gallen und Thun, 07.05.2021 - Since February 2021, the canton of Grisons is using saliva-based PCR mass testing within its mobile workforce as a potential means to contain the COVID-19 pandemic and reduce infection rates. Empa researchers are now leading the analysis of data from the first eight weeks of the testing regime. They observed a reduction in the incidence rate between 20 and 50%, depending on the business sector, and a noticeable reduction in the test positivity rate among those who were regularly tested. This suggests that viral propagation can indeed be contained through regular mass testing.

Go-ahead for Swiss m4m Center

Go-ahead for Swiss m4m Center
Federal Laboratory for Materials Testing and Research
Dübendorf, St. Gallen und Thun, 20.04.2021 - Since 15 April, it is official: The Technology Transfer Center for 3D Printing in Medical Technology – Swiss m4m Center, in short – meets the requirements of ISO standard 13485:2016; it is thus allowed to produce implants and instruments for human patients. The starting signal for promising projects with Swiss SMEs: The partner network already comprises 45 companies and research institutions.
The idea is as appealing as it is obvious: After a diagnosis of painful hip osteoarthritis, medical imaging creates a high-resolution 3D image of the defunct hip joint – and thus the basis for a customized implant. The data is processed further and ultimately ends up as a digital blueprint in a 3D printer, which produces the individual piece with a precise fit and at optimized cost.

How much does Switzerland consume? - 87 million tons of material each year

How much does Switzerland consume? - 87 million tons of material each year
Federal Laboratory for Materials Testing and Research
Dübendorf, St. Gallen und Thun, 15.04.2021 - Empa researchers have analyzed the entire material and energy flows of the Swiss economy. Their final report now provides important data and comparisons. The team also looked into how the behavior of the Swiss population affects greenhouse gas emissions.
Buildings, industrial plants, roads, cars, gasoline, electricity and all our consumption: What does Switzerland consume each year? How much of it is exported or disposed of? How much flows back into the economy? And what are the consequences for the environment? For a research team at Empa's "Technology and Society" lab, finding precise answers to these questions was a complex task. The MatCH project ("Material and energy resources and associated environmental impacts in Switzerland"), commissioned by the Federal Office for the Environment (FOEN), began in 2013 and was carried out in several stages. The first part covered all material and energy flows in the construction sector; the second covered mobility. And Part 3 was devoted to the production and consumption of other goods that are imported, produced domestically and exported.
